History of the Club
ArborLinks was built in partnership with Landscapes Unlimited, The National Arbor Day Foundation, and Arnold Palmer Design as a project dedicated to constructing a links which would embrace key environmental practices and serve as an on-going living laboratory for future research. Throughout the construction of the course, many practices were applied to insure that ArborLinks offers a true testament to environmentally-responsible golf:
- 2 types of greens were constructed: USGA and California-style
- Less than 150 total acres of the property is irrigated. The remaining acreage has been planted with a wide variety of native grasses to eliminate excessive watering, and to prevent erosion
- Stream bank renovations were completed in creative fashion on hole #2
- Minimal amounts of chemicals are used on turf maintenance to prevent excessive run-off and environmental damage
- Minimal earth-shaping completed to maximize the site while limiting overall habitat impact
- Planting of a wide array of tree varietals to educate guests throughout the experience
At the grand opening in 2002, Arnold Palmer joined Christine Todd Whitman, then the current head of the Environmental Protection Agency for a round of golf to celebrate the completion of the course, and the accomplishment of the founders to create such a project. In conjunction with the grand opening, ArborLinks was a partner-host in the Golf and the Environment Conference in Nebraska City which gathered industry leaders from a national perspective to discuss on-going environmental practices with regards to golf course construction and maintenance.
In 2007, ArborLinks was converted into a private destination club for its Members and guests to enjoy. Five guest cottages and renovations to the clubhouse and golf course were completed. It is the intention of the ownership to create a national club consisting of golf purists who are dedicated to preserving the traditions of game. ArborLinks is dedicated to providing its members a golf club in the highest order. In addition, the Club will support the spirit of amateur golf through hosting key events sponsored by the USGA, NCAA, NGA, PGA, Trans-Mississippi Golf Association, and other key national and regional golf associations in the future.
The History of Spangler’s Porch
In 2003, the west deck area at ArborLinks was dedicated in honor of Dick Spangler; a Nebraska golf legend and friend to all of us at ArborLinks. Dick Spangler earned three letters for the Nebraska golf team from 1950 to 1952, was a Nebraska Amateur champion and served on the board of the Trans-Mississippi Golf Association. Always a gentleman, his quick wit, enjoyable sense of humor and his dedication to the game of golf brought honor and credit to the University of Nebraska and the great game of life.
Dick Spangler was inducted into the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame in 1997. He passed away on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2003 in Lincoln. He is survived by his wife, Bobbie, and sons and daughters-in-law Rich and Marga, Russ and Gail, and Bill and Alesia. Bill Spangler is the Nebraska’s men’s golf coach.
ArborLinks is proud to have the Spangler family as members to the club, and we continue to celebrate the spirit of the game and life that Dick embraced and shared with so many of us.
